“Brass Monkey” - Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys never fail to serve up some good time music. Licensed to Ill is one of the earliest albums I have loved in my life, used to listen to the living hell out of it specially “Girls” which I probably listened to a little bit too much when I was a kid. I have always been obsessed with the fairer sex so it’s not too shocking I dug that song like I did. I also loved this fun and addictive song, long before I even knew what brass monkey even was or pretty well anything else in the song but as a kid I just heard the beats and bass and was sold. I came too late to even try brass monkey but it must have been pretty great to have a song written for it, or shitty enough that it gets select people obsessed which is right down my alley as well. While I came too late for the beverage there’s never coming too late for this song. While it’s obviously set in the 80s it’s just one of those timeless tracks much like the Beastie Boys are timeless, innovators and damn good musicians. Chose the song while just running errands though with a cigarette between my lips and a sound system in the truck pumping bass I knew it was the choice of the day. You will find there’s gonna be a lot of different Beastie Boy songs throughout these song of the day entries because they have a way with turning a dull day into a fun day. “Inn I evighetens morke, pt. 1” - Dimmu Borgir

Out of all the black metal out there there’s nobody who has impressed me more the Dimmu Borgir. Honestly I’ve stuck to their 2000-2010 works mainly so far but since I’m going through 1995 it was time to take on this early and murky sound. I saw the album cover and instantly fell in love! The kick ass art, the band logo, and the font had me instantly sold and it just so happened that the music within was also damn good! More of an atmospheric album which I expected no less from Dimmu Borgir, but honestly I wasn’t sure what to expect since even before I listened to it I knew it was gonna be a touch different than what I was used to. Still really good, not enough to beat out Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia or Eonian though the music in this album is a whole different beast all together. I really love the atmosphere this song has, I was just working on this here website when it came on and I got lost in visions of overgrown forests and forgotten graveyards. I’m growing more and more fond of atmospheric/melodic black metal as the years move forward, the more I’m getting into the years it flourished. Even if you have a negative view of black metal pretty well anyone can get behind the instrumental tracks like this one. I just really cherish it when bands can use their sound to weave images in your head and even make you feel a breeze on your neck. Give the track a listen and you’ll know what I mean.

“Feuer frei!” - Rammstein

Man does Rammstein kick ass or what?! Their brand of grooving industrial metal is probably the easiest stuff to headbang to or just have a damn good time. I chose this track after hearing it in the background of some random ass internet video with some dude skating on "rollerblades" he made out of keyboards and had old computer mouses trailing behind him. It was oddly impressive and reminded me of the good old days of the internet where randomness came with shitty video quality and creativity. I miss those days before YouTube sold its soul and so did humanity to that all mighty dollar though that second part I think happened well before my birth. Anyways the video was cool and the guy making it chose a damn good track to go along side it. I mean you really can’t go wrong with any Rammstein. It’s not shocking they’re one of the only bands I can name that did well in my day of radio in a different language. Especially in the metal world, to have metal blasting over the radio and not being named Metallica is impressive in itself but to have it be in German is the cherry on top. Still remember when I first heard “Du Hast” when I was 8 or so and was like “god damn… who is this?!”. Later I came across them again on Guitar Hero or Rock Band and fell in love all over again, since then I cannot get enough of the band! I had a friend named Logan when I lived in North Carolina that was also pretty into the band, gave me a chance to listen to more of them aside from the one CD I had and the stuff I listened to on YouTube. Once the age of piracy came to my door then I had everything I could gather, more modernly they’re on most of my metal playlists since they honestly feel incomplete without Rammstein. I am honestly not huge into bands I cannot understand, they gotta have something else to keep me rolling. The psychedelia and impressive guitar work of Santana, or the atmosphere of Norwegian black metal bands. Or the intoxicating groove and bombastic nature of Rammstein.

"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" - The Andrew Sisters

One of the genres and decades I am most excited to get into after I finish my conquest of rock, metal, punk & country is the traditional pop of the 1940's along side the crooners, jazz, swing, jump blues and big band. The Andrew Sisters have always been a group I have enjoyed but never really done a deep dive of much like Bing Crosby that they often sing alongside. I dedicated the whole day of Sunday to the music of the 30's and 40's and it was a blast. I am still playing Mafia II (well I beat the main story but now I am going for the DLC) so hearing all this music again on Friday was a great time and I couldn't help but desire to hear more. This is one of the most famous tracks from The Andrew Sisters and maybe even the 1940's. It holds a dear place in the United States history with its war time backing and music history as a whole, as does plenty of other tracks from these swingin' ladies. I mean listen to this track and you will understand why, their tight singing all together with a damn good swinging in the background really grabs your attention. A fun story and an impressive showy nature of the song leaves an impression on you. Me and my lady were just having another lazy Sunday morning when this track came on and I was thrilled to hear it again after hearing it a couple of times Friday. I thought when she was going to wake up she was gonna give me a puzzling look to what the hell I am listening to since she's used to waking up to Bob Dylan or Darkthrone but nope not a word. After some chatting on the matter she seemed to dig it as well, even if it was 80 years ago it can still grab the attention of young adults today. There is something timeless about pure talent and compelling singing. So once I finish this project I am not gonna let myself breathe, I am taking on all the greats of the 1930's and 1940's aside from just the western swing and country side of those decades which I have already taken on and love. That doesn't mean while I have time away from doing my playlists and year by year deep dives that I can't dabble further into the Andrew Sisters though. I have been impressed by everything I have heard thus far and I expect there to be many more gems throughout their 113 charted hits and all the other tracks from their damn long career.

"Searchin' for a Rainbow" - The Marshall Tucker Band

Some sweet sweet southern rock always sets the mood right. Be it a beer in hand or the wheel or a beautiful woman this music is made for a good time, even the sad songs have this special lick of good times behind them. "Searchin' for a Rainbow" is one of the best tracks that came out of The Marshall Tucker Band and believe you me there are a ton of great songs from them. Probably my favorite southern rock band after the almighty Lynyrd Skynyrd. The album this song come off of is also a favorite of mine, me and my gorgeous little lady have traveled many a highway with these tracks playing in the background. Few better albums for traveling especially in the hot summer days on desert highways. We would search for ghost towns, not like some of those ghost hunting types but in the name of adventure and history. Around Utah most of the ghost towns are pretty well a fence post next to a buildings frame and if you're lucky you get a plaque with its history severely weather worn so you can't even read what the hell was there. I usually always would look up its history before going and fill Alesha in as we went. Some of my best memories are upon the road, feeling the AC and the all consuming relaxing feeling of movement, the whine of tires on the black top. I can't hear a song from this album without reminiscing of those memories. We still try getting out but that was before gas was unreal expensive and my damned truck was acting up. I beat that poor bastard up offroading for hours trying to find those plots that people once slept, shit and ate on. No regrets though, we had a damn fine time and it was partially due to the songs that were playing over the speakers as we experienced our own form of the "American dream" before we came back to the American reality after driving for hours. I will get back to it some day, hopefully in a different state I just hope it can be even close to as pretty as the natural beauty that is Utah. I wonder what songs will fill the air on those days, what kind of person I will be and if I will enjoy it like I did before. I am a natural born travelin' man so obviously I am gonna love the hell out of it, and when I get back to it the king of the highway will ride once more with "Searchin' for a Rainbow" being there with me.

"Not Fade Away" - The Crickets / Buddy Holly

If there is one musician that gets close to my love of Elvis Presley it would be Buddy Holly both his solo work and the Crickets. He is a great musician, a pure joy to listen to and even with his short discography has countless amazing songs to enjoy. If there was one musician I would save from death it would be Buddy Holly, I am so curious what he would have achieved, would he have went the country route later in his career like Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and so many other 50's rock musicians or would he have went the softer route like Elvis or Roy Orbison, though I suppose Elvis played in country later in his career as well. I mean most of these boys came from places that country was king so it isn't all too shocking and they placed both on country charts and popular music charts so it is only natural I suppose. That and Buddy Holly having Waylon Jennings in his band is also a sign of the potential route he would have went. I think he would have had a great voice for country and his fun way of singing would have been a great addition to the already great country musicians that filled the 1960's. Anyways Buddy Holly was really taken away from us too soon, I always shed a tear when I remember I won't have the chance to listen to more from him, I just abuse the albums he does have out and the compilations that followed his death. "Not Fade Away" is a classic to come out of the 1950's, shit all of The "Chirping" Crickets is a classic and easily one of the best albums to come out of the 50's rock scene. Its fun bouncy and emotion riddled yet fun as hell singing style leaves a serious impression on you. I chose this track when playing a favorite video game of mine Mafia II once again, damn good game with a stellar collection of songs. I already loved Buddy Holly before first picking the game up over 10 years ago, so it is more like coming back home when playing the game. The music hits so much better when you're in an immersive world that portrays the style of the time. I just pulled the car over on a rainy night in the game and just relaxed, man do I wish I could go back in time. I always have said if I could go back in time to live my life over I would have chosen to be 14 or 15 in 1957, I love everything about the 1950's (aside from real life problems and the societal views which were plain dumb) but the aesthetic, the cars, the music, the style, being in between wars, cheaper living, and a realness that we lack today. Trust me I am lucky to live in a time when I have a massive amount of music literally at my finger tips but man I would easily trade it all just to sit in my car on a rainy night and listen to the radio for hours. I dream my life away so there is no use in doing that now, so for now I just listen to some damn fine rock n roll music!

“December” - Collective Soul

As I was trudging through the good, the bad and the ugly of 1995 while driving I was damn glad to hear Collective Souls self titled gem start up. Man “December” has gotta be one of the best tracks to come out of 1995 and that’s saying something because there are some truly great rock tracks filling that year! The song is catchy and seems to have a natural pull to your ears, well it does for me at least. One that feels like a short song but is standard playing time just based off of how well put together the song is. Compelling and addictive, one of the reason I kept to their hits for so long before jumping into their albums. I only started their deep dive 2 years ago and I felt dumb when I realized how many great tracks are within the first few albums. I mean I’m not sure if there is any that can beat “December” and the other great song off this album “The World I Know”. Collective Soul is sort of one of those “greatest hits” kind of bands but that doesn’t mean their albums aren’t worth a listen. There’s a whole different side of them when you get away from the more commercial appeal tracks. This album and Hints, Allegations & Things Left Unsaid have had me obsessed the last 2 years so when I heard “Simple” start I knew I was in for a good time giving the album another listen. Much better than the Blessed Union of Souls album that played right before it, not talking shit to any fans of that band. Point remains this song will forever be affiliated with the great rock hits that came out of the 1990s and there’s a reason for that.

“Magic” - Pilot

​One of those songs everybody knows but nobody seems to know who it’s by. I mean Pilot didn’t hit the same same fame as others in the 70s soft rock stage though this track is a bona fide classic of the genre. The song is intoxicating, it can make you have a good day even on the way to a funeral. Catchy as sin and a damn memorable chorus that anyone who knows rock can instantly recognize. I love when I hear the intro to the track cause I know it’s gonna be a damn good 3 minutes. I chose this track just on a common day doing my common labor but I made time to appreciate the music and it made my mundane putting things on shelves actually enjoyable. Put a little pep to my step and I deeply hope my coworkers didn’t see me doing a little extra flourishing in my steps. One of those songs that are easy to see why they have lasted the test of time, I mean it being in a good few famous movies will do it too. None the less, Pilot is a one hit wonder in the modern day though they had a few more aside from this track but “Magic” is certainly their bread and butter. One thing to also appreciate about this song and the album it came off of is the albums name From the Album of the Same Name. A strangely fun album title, it’s not eluding to being called “Pilot” or is there even a track called Pilot, kind of a confusing name. “Have you listened to Pilot before?” “no but I know “Magic”, is there an album I should listen to?” “Their best album is From the Album of the Same Name”. It seems a little confusing but I like the album name, shit is memorable as well, just like this great track.

“2 AM” - Slightly Stoopid

A true stoner classic from a band that’s as pleasant as they are great in the styles they push forward, the great melding of reggae with many different genres. This was the second Slightly Stoopid song I came across and loved and the rest is history, been a big fan for the last 10 years. There has been many a bowl loaded to this track, many a sandwich bag switched from hand to hand with that solid bass in the background. I have countless memories to this track and its appeal is pretty broad. I have came across few who don’t like the track and Slightly Stoopid appeals to a broad spectrum of music fans. When trying to get further into reggae after being obsessed with Sublime and Bob Marley for years Slightly Stoopid was one of the first places I went. While they aren’t roots reggae or this stage of the band isn’t too similar to modern California reggae bands like Stick Figure they’re a ton like the multi genre powerhouse Sublime. Just an all around great band and an all around great song, I think it’s one that will be alongside stoner culture so long as people are getting baked. Not even just from the lyrical content but also from that damn good rhythm of the song that will get stuck in your head for hours. Even with the ever shifting tides of time switching up weed culture the song still stands true. Even if bong loads switched to vapor the song still feels great when inebriated.

“Time Bomb” - Godsmack

Sometimes it just feels like the universe is trying to guide you to a certain path, I have found that songs can convince me to do things much easier than a human can. I’ve quit jobs because the track had lyrics that struck me in that moment, I mean it’s probably more I’m just looking for something and it shows up but still. Strangely enough it was Hall & Oates that finally convinced me to leave my last gig. Man that last job was awful! This one ain’t great but that last warehouse really set the bar crazy low. Anyways well I was kind of over this place, common mix of overworking and lack of appreciation. My constant curse of feeling not enough or my even worse curse of constantly stressing on time since it’s the ultimate commodity. Then “Time Bomb” came on from the ever kick ass Godsmack. I’m usually not one to meld anger with my other emotions, I’m genuinely not much of an angry person though there’s times that some tracks can bring it out of me. Godsmack is one of those bands that can easily do it, KoRn broke me down and made me feel hopeless and sad then Godsmack came up to just piss me off. I’m not even sure who I was mad at, mainly at myself or that elusive control master that pulls my strings like the corporate puppet I am. It made me realize I’m wasting time at this place, I’ve fell down a pit of fear that keeps me shackled into being poor and depressed all in the name of comfort and laziness. So I think I was pissed at myself, not the kicking shit over kind of pissed, more the “over it” kind of pissed. Where you wanna do nothing but sit there simmering, as a “Time Bomb”. Anyways, I love this album it was one of the earliest albums I can remember having around the house. I remember hearing “Bad Religion” on some ATV game on the PS2 and instantly being sold on Godsmack. I had a crush on the girl on the album cover too, I mean she’s really not my type now but growing up I sure thought she was. Maybe I’m drawn to destructive things but am wise enough to steer clear, the constant struggle for self that I know all too well. One thing I do know within myself is I love this album, and as much as Godsmack can come off condescending the band's great. Straight forward hard rock with no frills, straight shot right into the vein.

“Strange Magic” - Electric Light Orchestra

The day was filled with ELO and friends, the chosen playlist of the day was the one I made for those wanting to get into ELO from my artist series of playlists so it was fitting that chances of ELO being selected was high. I really love the sound that comes from the band, completely them and completely original. Inspiring a ton of different sounds from it, one of those groups practically anyone can get behind. It’s nice and chill, flowing and flowery, spacey and moving. This song is one of the best especially from their first 5 albums only maybe being beat by “Evil Woman” the track that got me into ELO in the first place. I love this song for driving at night during winter, it matches the mood perfectly. That mystical melancholy that fills quiet nights upon the road. Anyways, while the song lacks in the way of lyricism it fully makes up with it with its consuming atmosphere. I chose this track while eating in an underground parking lot of a business called "No Trespassing", weird business name if you ask me. The quiet still air under there complimented the track, so did the chili from my hot dog falling all over my damn shirt. Knew by the middle of this blissful song that it was gonna be the choice of the day, I’m surprised it hasn’t shown up already yet honestly.

“I Want You” - Bob Dylan

There are few things better than the open road and good music. Honestly I don’t know if there is anything better in life and it’s all that much better when it’s with the woman you love. After a nice long drive on the highways and byways it was time to get some chow. Something nice and healthy like Arbys seemed the best bet, especially since they brought back potato wedges and my missus likes her potato stuff. So after getting the food it was time to find a nice shady parking lot to eat. As much as I’m not proud I come from the land with a shit load of Mormons I am grateful they have a church every damn block because there’s always a shady and clean (explain the Mormons in 2 words) parking lot a stones throw away. While eating and just enjoying the day this song came along, Bob Dylan has strangely always had a place in mine and Alesha's relationship. Be it “Lay Lady Lay” at the start of our love or “She Belongs to Me” in our mature modern love. So it was another fitting moment in the triumph of our relationship. “I Want You” is perfect for a happy day, perfect for even the sun beating down on you as you eat more meat than you really should (Murica!). There were plenty of great tracks throughout the day but this is the one that fully grabbed. A peaceful and whimsical track that is as great being forefront and center as it is great just playing in the background.

“Leavin’ Trunk” - Keef Hartley Band

If someone asks “what is a rock hidden gem” this track is one of the first to come to mind. Even through my research while setting up the thousands of songs and hundreds of albums I was to go through for rock of the 1960s my radar some how missed this kick ass band. I found them a year or two later and knew right when the intro was going that I done fucked up, once the 2010s are done I’m gonna go back and fill all the blanks and it’s for bands and songs like this one. This track is heavy as sin and like most of the proto-metal its blues backing makes this shit addictive as hell. This style is one of my all time favorite sounds, shit is rocking while heavy as hell while being completely mellow. Kind of stuff you can smoke a joint to and go for a motorcycle ride, or just chill at home and play some video games. Good stuff especially when the lyricism is great to match. Each time this intro starts when listening to my playlists casually I always think it’s Budgie, aside from the organ and the vocals this is pretty well Budgie. I don’t mean that in a copy cat way or anything, if there’s one band you’d wanna be confused with it would be Budgie. I was just working, getting inventory looking good when this song came on. I hope I counted shit right cause I ain’t gonna lie, I was awfully distracted by the intoxicating heavy blues my ears were taking in. Though good music comes before most in my life, I’m a hard worker and will do my fair share though I need that soul candy rock n roll to keep me going. I need to distribute this track on more of my playlists so it’s not a hidden gem in my 20,000+ song catalogue. Anyways, a good track that I suggest anyone who likes garage rock or blues check out.

“Beggars & Hangers-On” - Slash’s Snakepit

I have been excited to take Slash’s Snakepit on for a good while, I touched on an album here or there for the last 3 years but finally their time came around to be part of the 1990s segment of my studies. The album was decent, there were certainly killer tracks and filler tracks. A solid 7/10 album so that didn’t leave me disappointed and when I heard this song come along when fighting traffic and my poor truck overheating on the freeway it took away a lot of my stresses. Even if I did overheat at least I would have some kick ass blues licked hard rock to see me to the side of the road in this damned summer heat. In a lot of ways songs like this is what I think the soul of summer is, an audible example of summer days and drunken summer nights. A kick ass supergroup made up of Guns N’ Roses band members and Jellyfish frontman and vocalist Eric Dover. When GNR couldn’t agree on an artistic direction then spurred Slash and others to release this album, and another one in 2000. It still has that GNR sound but only in spirit, it’s a completely different band that has the bombastic nature you’d expect from the members comprising the band but there’s still a blues based guitar work in the album and a 1990s rock atmosphere that has you rockin. Glad my time came around to give the album a play and I was glad to hear this song again since it’s the one that got me into the band anyways. Probably the best track on the album in my opinion.

“Say Hello” - Fuzz

Fuzz is easily one of the best bands I have came across from the 2010s so far! I haven’t delved too far into the 2010s since I’m damn preoccupied with other decades and am currently sifting through the 1990s which will probably take me another year and a half until its completion and I have no idea how long the 2000s will take. I’m assuming I’ll get into the 2010s around 2029 at the rate I’m going which gouges my heart but I’m not gonna give up now, the history of rock and the other genres is my lifeblood so it doesn’t matter how long it takes. Just hope I see its completion before I die in a motorcycle wreck or get shot like a true American. Anyways, “Say Hello” is nice and heavy and in your face after its long ramping up intro. A wonderful mix of modern rock sound and a kick ass garage rock proto-metal style you’d expect to come out of 1968. I knew from the first time I heard this track that I stumbled upon something fucking kick ass! I have loved everything I’ve heard from them since and really need to set time aside to give their albums a start to finish listen. You also gotta love that album cover! It explains the sound within the sleeve wonderfully. The bands that reach backwards and mix it with a modern sound sometimes come across as trying too hard in my opinion but that’s not the case with “Say Hello”. A damn good song that rockers of old and today could dig if they like the hard rock n roll distortion and in your face style. Give them a listen and you’ll find something kick ass as well and hopefully you find the time to give their other tracks a spin.

“The Loser” - Gene Summers

I have plenty of lyrical themes that I love but there’s few I love more than self deprecation. Wonder what that says about me, though if you’ve came along this far I’m sure you’ll notice that happiness and me took two different roads. None the less when I first heard this song I knew it was for me, that old time rockabilly/country style with a steady pace. And most importantly lyrics that spoke to my soul. Both depressive lyrics and even a touch of that rambling bug mixed together for this hidden gem. While I’ve been a long time rockabilly fan it’s hard getting every musician since the fan base didn’t leave much notes on who is who and most of the musicians didn’t make it all too far especially if they weren’t touched by the sunshine that came out of Sun Records. So year by year I’m collecting more tracks and musicians to dive into. This last year I came across Gene Summers though it seems there’s mainly compilations of his work on Spotify which is enough for me, especially for rockabilly and country that came out of the 1960s I’ll take what I can get, shit is sometimes hard to come by unless it’s a bigger name. Country is an odd genre, they hardly kept anything alive to go into the modern day. Practically a graveyard of forgotten musicians, and it breaks my damn heart. I have a massive list of names to check into once a month to see if anymore of their work got put up. Even some legendary country stars like Roger Miller are still missing half of their shit. I’m not sure who’s to blame but it makes me sad. I would love to have a full album released as it was from Gene Summers instead of picking through half assed compilations, even though I’m sure it’s cause most of his 50s and 60s work were singles. None the less I guess you get what you get, but that won’t stop me from throwing a fit especially with this fucking fly that won’t leave me alone while I type this! I’m not a bug killer but you’re really pushing me, I hope you’re reading this from my shoulder. Stupid fly. Anyways, a damn good track especially for those who like the old country and rockabilly! One of my best finds last year for sure.

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” - Green Day

Now I am kind of cheating since the version I picked is the album version where “Holiday” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” are the same song though I wanted to save “Holiday” and honestly it’s this section of the song that grabbed me this time around. I’m also glad to see two Green Day tracks in the same month, guess the bands been really grabbing me this time around. None the less the song is great yet depressing. Maybe not depressing but real, the way I feel often since I’m still grieving over my lost dreams. School and life really sets you up to fail, pretty quick I went from thinking I could do anything to getting knocked down hard realizing there ain’t much I can do. None the less I have also came to realize that angsty stuff be it Green Day or Sum 41 may have a certain appeal to teenagers though you don’t fully understand the songs until you get older. In a way I feel like they’re written for young adults, ones that still haven’t left their youth behind but are struggling in this damned rat race. I mean this track isn’t really the ideal example of that I’m trying to say but it’s still a good example. Crazy to think I would bitch about certain things back then, I was fighting society so damn hard claiming I would never be its victim but man did I end up being the thing I sought to destroy. I remind myself almost daily in that failure but what the hell am I to do? I need money to live, and the money I get barely keeps me alive. I wanna run away to Seattle as we speak but how am I gonna get there? My vehicle is a piece of shit since I don’t make enough to keep it running strong. I guess I could sell it and take my bike but then what? I love the idea of my motorcycle being my main mode of transportation but it’s dangerous and I can only ride it half the year unless I want to be a popsicle. Anyways I’m disappointed by how my life turned out, I’m still young but times not stopping. I know it’s about the small things but what’s wrong with wanting the big things? As for me I suppose I’ll walk alone.

“No Way” - Adolescents

Adolescents always come across with the perfect blend of the 70s punk rock mixed with the hardcore punk of the 1980s. The year this album comes out of makes sense too but the band has impressed me at every turn the further I go down the rabbit hole. This song is kick ass with comical lyricism aside from the parts that aged like milk. Like what you’d expect out of punk it comes in hot as hell and then ends just as fast and hot as hell. I first came across the band when first playing Grand Theft Auto 5 that featured their “Amoeba” and right when I heard that track I looked the band up and was pissed I missed out on them up to that point. Man I love Grand Theft Auto 5, one of the only games or media I have ever preordered since I abused the living hell out of GTA 4. Well I came across this track around the same time since I jumped right into the album after hearing “Amoeba” the first time. The band had a shorter run for their prime years and I haven’t gotten to their modern stuff yet but I’m really excited to, admittedly I’m a touch worried since their 80s work is some of the best of punk from the decade. For now I love and enjoy their earlier work and worry about that later and “No Way” is a track that I will come back to plenty of times when longing for some kick ass punk rock.

“Fast Car” - Tracy Chapman

If I had a page for the “song of the year blog” then the first song on that page would be “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. This song is perfect all the way through and always takes everyone’s attention in the room when it plays. Simple power with beautiful playing and singing with a sad yet real lyricism that has you locked. No matter that I’m doing this track will always stop me just to listen. I haven’t met anyone in the world that doesn’t like this song, maybe I just don’t hang around those that lack a soul or maybe lack ears. If you’re reading this and you don’t have ears I’m so sorry you can’t hear this song. It’s a song for dreamers, a song for the common man, a song for hopeless romantics, a song for depressive psyches, a song for anyone who knows strife. Tracy Chapman PERFECTLY paints a picture in your head, which some musicians seem to never be able to pull off no matter how hard they try. Then there is this track, which seems as natural as the wood that acoustic guitar is made out of. You can almost see the girl to woman being talked about, you can feel the night wind flooding the fast car as they drive. I'm also a massive fool for lyrics that start as they end, I dig that theme in movies and games as well. This story starts and ends the same, which is sad but that just fully seals the deal on the lyrical prowess that Chapman possess in this classic folk rock/pop masterpiece! I don’t even know if I can think up a “where to next” for this track, this just might be the top of the mountain. You made it, there’s nowhere else for you to go… so maybe we should just listen to the song again?

“Panic Song” - Green Day

Green Day for some reason has always been a band I seek out when I’m feeling lonesome, ornery, and mean. I don’t even typically seek out a certain song or one that matches my mood just something Green Day and there’s a 80% chance it’s gonna be something from Nimrod or earlier. So after a couple hours of stewing in my own self pity I went out for a drive and plopped on this track. It was fitting too since I’m going through 1995 right now (so don’t be shocked to see that year more often). With the stagnant summer night heat this song matched up right as soon as I lit my final cigarette for the night. A nice long intro that thumps its way into your ear drums and gets you pumped until finally at 1:58 the song takes off. A perfect use of getting the crowd sucked into the intro then a sweet punk release of that realer than real lyricism that I have always loved Green Day for. More often than not I can feel which song will be my song of the day and just have to remember it when I add it before bed and I knew right at the intro that this kick ass track was the one. Like I mentioned in a previous post Green Day has been with me longer than almost any other band, if not the longest band with me since my love for music blossomed. So they are welcomed any time in my playlists or my website, and will live in my heart and soul rent free until I die. “Panic Song” is a shining gem in their collection, a punk goodie that isn’t overkill on anything unless you don’t like long intros. Anyone that knows me knows I love a good long intro, love the longing it forces into you before release! This song does it oh so well!

“Another Holy War” - Blind Guardian

Power metal in a lot of ways is the backbone of heavy metal. Right when it first showed up they have held strong and true through the shifting sands of metals history. They are probably one of the earliest genres of metal as well. With that long of a history and multiple modern variations from piracy to goblins to Vikings it’s only understandable that I’m strangely picky with power metal. I’m a massive fool for the stuff that came out of the 1980s and 90s and Blind Guardian is one of the most impressive and successful to come out of those decades if not in all of power metals history. They’re fast as can be and write some mighty compelling songs, each member of the band is a joy to listen to and leaves you impressed. Now that I can finally start sifting through 1995 one of the first places I stopped off is Blind Guardians legendary Imaginations from the Other Side. Pure power metal all the way through and it was one of the first Blind Guardian albums I sunk my teeth into all those years ago, so it was nice to go through it again and collect all the stellar tracks on it. “Another Holy War” is the crown jewel in the album as far as I’m concerned, I love the aggression in the track. One that’s not too deep into fantasy and can please the palate of most metal heads especially ones that focus on guitar work.

“Metal Meltdown” - Judas Priest

The gods of metal have arrived! Painkiller always impresses me with its aggressive metal especially that far into the bands career. In my eyes it’s one of the best “comebacks” if you can call it that. Shit is heavy as hell with every track practically exploding with vigor and fury. “Metal Meltdown” is no different, and much like in Judas Priest style the band shamelessly forwards the “metal mythology” which is one of my favorite lyrical themes. Funny thing about this track is it just seems to get harder as it goes on, a face melting track from an album that leaves you gasping for air and pissing blood. I’ve always hated writing about metal and talking about metal because some metal heads think they’re above everyone else, some spit on the great bands that came before or bands like Priest that practically served them the metal they listen to now in one way or another. I’m not saying this song is heavier than anything that’s ever been put out, but the shit is heavy. Just not the same way as Whalefucker Christ Nipple Twist or whatever the hell your favorite band is. With that out of the way let’s just enjoy some damn good heavy metal that is relentless and enjoyable. Like what you’d expect out of the band it’s fast and brutal with Halford sending out those glass shattering vocals. I think Painkiller really gave the drummer (Scott Travis) a spotlight, shit most of the band gets to show off a little more on this album. One of the last true great Judas Priest albums if not the last one in my opinion. Halford departed up until 2005 which only supports my claim. Still that’s just an opinion, but Painkiller really blows me away time and time again and it’s because it holds tracks like this one here.

“No Excuses” - Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains always hits it right man! Few bands that I cherish more than them. They’ve been with me through all the tides of my life, from hearing it as a kid from my parents and the radio into my first MP3 to my first iPod to my streaming days. I will forever love the band and welcome them to any of my playlists no matter how obscure they might be along side black metal or classic country. Just all around a good time, though their music is often sad it’s not overwhelmingly somber in atmosphere to really alter your mood all too much. Music that can be played in practically any mood, with an impressive amount of quality songs from their main early work and still plenty of great songs from their later work too. “No Excuses” is a true classic for Alice In Chains, a nice mellow atmosphere with twiddling drums and peaceful strumming. Just an all around great track much like the other tracks on the EP/Album Jar of Flies with its memorable cover art and strong lasting appeal even all these years later. Their famous vocal harmonies and the bands blatant warnings to drug usage and depression never really go out of style so long as humans getting fucked up doesn’t go out of style which it never will. In a boring and sad world it’s only understandable to wanna feel good, that and humans are plain dumb. Even if this is a cold world there is always a silver lining, one of which is Alice In Chains. Grunge is great but I don’t think it would have been nearly as potent without Alice In Chains, the less punk licked harder side of grunge music. A powerhouse of a band that each member is damn talented at making great music. The solo works and side projects that spurred from the band are great too, not even with me having my “love goggles” on, they’re straight up great. Anyways forgot when this song was chosen, though I’m sure it was a good time with this track playing. It’s not shocking that this EP was the first EP in history to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard 200.

“I’m So Sick” - Flyleaf

Now this choice is kind of a cop out, it’s one I tend to mark when I’m sick as a motherfucker. When I’m sick for some reason I don’t play too much music, mainly cause it makes me sway or will keep me awake when I should be sleeping. I mean it’s a fitting enough song for when you’re feeling crappy. Though it’s not even a song about being genuinely ill but the title is enough for me. A classic for anyone who digs 2000s rock/hard rock. I really dig Flyleaf even with their religious based lyricism and short lived prime career. I think Lacey Mosley is one of the most entertaining female rock singers to come out. She’s not only impressive in range but just an overall joy to listen to. This track is legendary, most everyone knows it especially if you were growing up in the 2000s. Just a straight forward rock track that hits all the right points and luckily this one isn’t down your throat god preach which seems to make up half of their work. The self titled album this comes off of is also one that caught me completely off guard on how much I really liked it. Pretty when it’s gonna be pretty and harsh when it’s time to be harsh. Plus that album cover takes me back in time, shit screams 2000s angst. So count the track if you will since it wasn’t chosen due to playing during the day but I’m still gonna count it. If it wasn’t this one then it would be nothing or something else around being sick. Plus I’m glad to have it in the playlist and on the website cause it’s a damn fine track.

“Society” - Subhumans

This month has had plenty of the chill choices aside from Guns N’ Roses so I was glad to have some hardcore punk show up to mix up the playlist. Subhumans are legendary in the punk world and are on the biggest names to take on the Anarcho-Punk movement and one of the best names to take it on as well. They were my intro to that side of punk rock and I loved it right off the bat. Well I woke up that Sunday morning feeling completely awful from some food that got me damn ill. So while I was puking I heard this song in the background, there are few genres more pleasant to puke to than punk especially hardcore punk. Now some may view that as a negative or me talking shit but in some ways it’s the ultimate compliment. Subhumans would even agree I’m sure especially with their early work. None the less the track is a punkers paradise, fast as all sin and spitty enough you can feel some of the saliva hitting your face all these years later. Lyrical content of civil discontent and a little humor to boot. A full package hardcore punk track and I agree that society is indeed quite a drag. As I grow older I found that the atmosphere doesn’t move me like it did being a pissed off kid but the lyrical content hits me even harder. While I fell victim to this wage slave bullshit I’m still just as pissed, but now I found that getting fucked up and pissed off doesn’t change much but the pen has the potential to change the tide. Not my pen per se but maybe some revolutionary will read my website and find this track and be like “damn… well off I go to overthrow the government” if you’re reading this dear revolutionary it is your time! Do it! This is the sign you’ve been waiting for! Listen to some Subhumans while you do it too, I can’t think of many better bands to usher in the change this country really needs.

“As Long As It Matters” - Gin Blossoms

Few finer places to start your 90s alternative deep dive than with the Gin Blossoms. Their brand of real life little problem lyricism and atmosphere is something that has dragged me back throughout a lot of my life. A simple sound that shackles itself in your soul with a natural pop knack that has the song being shackled into your brain too. They’re one I love on hungover mornings or just a simple day at home, they’re feel good music for a sad soul. I chose this song when I was just relaxing in bed with the woman I love and it matched the lazy mood of the hour. Lively enough it can help you out of bed but lovely enough to keep you laying down and relaxing. I’m slowly doing my own deeper intake of the Gin Blossoms and I’m finding more tracks to cherish as I go. I’ve always abused their 20th Century Masters greatest hits so it’s nice to finally take the band in all the good, the bad, and the ugly. One thing I do find is they always please my soul and mellow me the hell out.

“Dust in the Wind” - Kansas

When times are rough and I start over stressing on what the next steps in my life are I give this song a play. A bittersweet death song telling it exactly as it is. That we are all just dust in the wind. No matter how much money we make we still die the same, no matter which path we take we are still just a speck in the ever changing tide of time. While this view point isn’t the best one out there for positivity it’s always been comforting for me. All of our struggles we get caught up in are ultimately pointless. All the time we beg for is a constant moving river that hardly whispers our name before we meet our fate. Death is as natural and beautiful as life is. Nothing more nothing less we are mortal things that toil our whole lives to no real end. I remember the first time I heard this song pretty damn baked I knew that there was truth in these words. A wisdom that hasn’t fully left me both for the positives and the negatives. Though the speck of dust that we are still blows along with the other specks of dust that we love. Our existence is written and remembered by those in our hearts, those that share their small existence with us. Much like me and my website trying to make sure amazing tracks don’t get forgotten by the wind. Though Kansas will be dust in the wind, as will myself, as will you. Bittersweet in its own right, plus the song is haunting as hell. Well written and brilliantly beautiful with the strings and the mellow plucking. A perfect song one I plan to carry with me forever along with its simple philosophy.

“Welcome to the Jungle” - Guns N’ Roses

Appetite for Destruction is an album everyone should have on their shelves. It is literally perfect all the way through, an album that always has me blown the fuck away by how well put together and strong each track is. There really aren’t too many albums that match up in my opinion. Everyone knows “Welcome to the Jungle” and there’s a reason for that, because it is timeless and bristling with energy and a good time. Not surprising it was my choice as the festivities of the 4th were kicking into gear across the county. While waiting in a parking lot for a firework show to start with my beautiful lady beside me I heard that intro and knew this was the perfect song for the night. I could care less about patriotism or those damn polluting fireworks but I have always loved the shared recklessness that’s in the air on that night. “Welcome to the Jungle” has that same feeling to it, people willing to blow their fingers off just to see something go boom. Also this track is plain kick ass, a perfect diamond in the long life that rock has had. Everyone gets all uppity about which tracks get the fame when others don’t get anything. This song and anything that Guns N’ Roses has done deserve the love they get. They’re great and everyone else seems to agree, doesn’t make other songs any less great. That and in my opinion time is the true test, no critic or snob can beat out time. “Welcome to the Jungle” and the band is still highly recognizable today and I don’t think that will change. Not because of marketing or people’s parents (though those certainly help) but because it has something special that just feels good just as music should. It’s heavy without being too heavy, it’s bold without being annoying. It’s just a perfect song that people comically never look into the lyrics on. Anyways I don’t need to defend the song, since those that flip out about Guns N’ Roses (at least in my area) can stick it. Besides I’m mainly taking to myself anyways, highly doubt this website will gain much traction.

“Bad News” - Whitey Morgan and the 78’s

Finding modern country songs that fully grab me is pretty damn rare, even more rare is ones that grabbed me before I fell fully in love with country music aside from Johnny Cash. Though here is “Bad News” a song that I didn’t realize was a cover until I took the 3 year long deep deep dive into country music from 1920-1979. I’m honestly not sure which version I like the most, probably this one though I think he sells the image better and it doesn’t have the humor feeling like Johnny Cash’s or Eddy Arnold’s. I’m sure there’s more versions but these 3 are my main go to for this track. Anyways Whitey Morgan still keeps up that outlaw country style and that classic country sound without sounding novelty like some. I haven’t listened through any of their albums yet but I really should set some time aside to do so since everything I’ve heard up to now has impressed me through and through. In some ways I wish modern country kept to this style even though this track is 14 years old now so I don’t think I can still consider it “modern country” anymore. Still I love this style and sound, it just sounds like trouble or like… bad news. I chose this song while riding on my motorcycle, a fitting song for riding on a horse of steel. Makes you feel plain mean even though I’m hardly mean and hate social confrontation. Country always portrays characters that aren’t really the person singing so why can’t I when listening? Anyways, a through and through mighty fine track! One that can impress both the classic country fans and even some modern fans. Worth it to go check out the original and other versions as well.

“My Name Is Jonas” - Weezer

​This song right here shows Weezer’s natural seeming talent on making a compelling song. Through and through the song is enjoyable with that special 90s sound that few did better than Weezer. It’s heavy when it needs to be but still backed by a pop writers talent of making a damn good song that most anyone can get behind. Also a DAMN good way to start off an album, gets you ready for the greatness that is gonna follow after the track. Their self titled debut (the blue album) is a truly perfect album especially in the year it came out. It has everything you could want and should expect out of a 90s alternative rock album. Like mentioned before the album and songs are strangely heavy, like they’re playing it in their garage in boring suburbia. The lyrics can be comical or down right heartfelt. It’s in your face but still knows when to ease off the accelerator to let you breathe and get lost in their dreamy garage rock ballads. I love the album and I know I say that a lot but I like fucking love this album and all the tracks on it. Another one that was an earlier love of mine, I first got into Weezer from some weird flash rhythm game. It’s crazy to think flash games just disappeared, that was a lot of kids bread and butter. The predecessor to the apps that filled the early App Store, just fun sometimes artistic simple games. Anyways this one if I recall right was some bongos or something you hit in rhythm with the song. I think it had “Holiday” and some other track. It might have even been this song. Anyways I was hooked to that game since I had not only Weezer in good quality but you got to “drum along” with it. Wonder if anyone else out there remembers that little game on the computer. Anyways after that little game and my sister being into them I had a good intro to the band. Think I got Raditude and their self titled red album a Christmas or two later. Though nothing compares to this album in my opinion, an eternal 90’s rock classic!

“She Said She Said” - The Beatles

I love going back and playing Revolver, the place where I found out that I love the Beatles. I thought I was a cool kid  when first getting into older rock, a 6th grader thinking he was above the Beatles since those around me knew of them. Well I was dumb for that mindset, the Beatles are worth everything that the community have gave them then and now. They’re kick ass and have varying sounds but never leave their original sound behind. I was staying over at my aunts house and I think she was taking a nap or went to the store or something and left me there. So naturally I went over to her CDs to find something to listen to since my MP3 player was dead. Between taking the batteries out of her remote or finding a CD I figured the CD was the more polite thing. Well she had a lot of the Beatles and some of this and that as well though I spied Revolver and after looking around to make sure nobody was watching I threw it into the player and took a seat. I ate all my words, all the things that I have said previously (granted I was already talking out of my ass) and realized from that moment that the Beatles are… kick ass! It helped me open my eyes to music, to not put something down because I was too “cool” and to try everything out and hear it for what it’s worth. It still took me a couple of years to fully get into the softer (and older) side of rock music aside from a band here or there though Revolver is an early love of mine. Somewhere I like to return to when I want a Beatles album. Just enough of their psychedelic side, just enough of their pop side, just enough of their rock side. It’s a well balanced and smooth album full of notable tracks such as the one we have here. While “She Said She Said” isn’t the best track from Revolver it’s still a straight up great psychedelic laced rock track. Mellow and dreamy and inviting, it made me feel better just while putting parts on shelves at my job. Good shit.
